Fire Mitigation
Upper Pine actively pursues funds to support private property mitigation. The District uses the Firewise standards for high risk subdivisions. This service is performed by our seasonal fuels crews when they are not fighting a wildland fire. The district offers home assessments and grant writing assistance to subdivisions. The district assists subdivisions in preparing and updating Community Wildfire Protection Plans.Â
Chipper Rental Rebate Program
The district offers a large commercial chipper for homeowners and subdivisions to reduce the fire risk. This program encourages the chipping of slash from wildfire fuels mitigation work conducted on any privately owned property in La Plata and Archuleta Counties in Colorado. FireWise will reimburse the homeowner the lesser of $150/day or 50% of the cost, whether you rent a chipper yourself or hire a mitigation company to provide chipping services, assuming all requirements are met.Â
